Letter from the Chair:  Join Us at the First Public WELL Building Workshop in Houston - March 28th

“The time has come to elevate human health and comfort to the forefront of building practices and reinvent buildings that are not only better for the planet—but also for people.”

This is the thrust of the new WELL Building Standard. This new Standard marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based health and wellness interventions. It looks at buildings from a more human health centered viewpoint than that of the LEED rating system’s technically centered “Indoor Environmental Quality” Credits. The WELL Building Standard requires active occupant engagement and participation.

In this month’s WELL Building Standard workshop, on March 28th, attendees will learn how to harness the built environment as a vehicle to support human health, wellbeing, and comfort. Strategies for improving the nutrition, fitness, mood, sleep patterns and performance of occupants through design and construction practices will also be explored in detail. This intensive workshop helps building professionals and owners understand their role as public health practitioners.

The WELL Building Standard is also an example of how USGBC is partnering with other independent rating systems to acknowledge efforts that contribute to the Sustainability process, yet may not be recognized as part of LEED Certification. The LEED rating systems will never be everything to everyone. Yes I said it. It is important that we realize that, as important as the current and future LEED rating systems are, they are but tools that allow us to understand where we are and where we are going.

The right tools allow everyone to be recognized for their contributions as we grow to fully understand the impact the “Built Environment” has on us all.

Throughout the next year we will bring other complimentary rating systems to Houston for you to evaluate.

The Texas Gulf Coast Region is very excited to be able bring the WELL Building Standard workshop to Houston. This is the first time in has been publicly offered in our area. Seating is limited. I hope to see you there on the 28th!
