Gensler’s Maria Perez Selected as 2015 LEED Fellow

LEED Fellows are best-of-the-best in green building design, engineering and development

HOUSTON, TX – Gensler announced today that Maria Perez, AIA, has been named a 2015 LEED Fellow by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). This year’s 35 Fellows are being honored for their outstanding work as LEED Professionals and for the significance of their contributions to the green building community at large. The LEED Fellow designates the most exceptional professionals and it is the most prestigious designation awarded from GBCI.

“Maria Perez is a remarkable individual who has long been a leader in the green building movement,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO, GBCI and CEO and founding chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “Her expertise and excitement motivates all of us to continue to look ahead to what’s next and to continue the innovation that has been the hallmark of our movement. Sharing her passion, knowledge and commitment, Maria anchors both the past and the future of our movement.”

LEED Fellows are nominated by their peers, undergo an extensive portfolio review, must have at least 10 years of experience in the green building industry and hold a LEED AP with specialty credential, among other requirements. The evaluation process is carried out by the LEED Fellow evaluation committee. Perez is the only 2015 LEED Fellow in Houston and within Gensler.

“We are so pleased that Maria has been recognized by GBCI for her outstanding leadership,” said Gensler Regional Managing Principal David J. Calkins. “Her passion and commitment to sustainable design is an invaluable benefit to our firm, our region and our clients.”

“I was an early adopter of LEED at Gensler,” Perez said. “Beginning in 2003, I began developing building metrics and tools that would inform our design choices and provide our clients with more sustainable options. I have been an advocate for sustainable design as an educator and a designer. My work has extended beyond borders and beyond our firm. Sustainability is something I believe in deeply and I am very gratified to receive this recognition from GBCI for my accomplishments to date. I hope to continue transforming the built environment into a more sustainable future.”

The 2015 LEED Fellows will be recognized in Washington, D.C. at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, which is being held Nov. 18-20, 2015.
