Pending Increase in LEED Energy Performance Thresholds

Pending Increase in LEED Energy Performance Thresholds

By Tim Murray

The USGBC is in a public comment period and preparing to ballot membership for an increase in the minimum energy performance for LEED 2009 projects. This will change the PREREQUISITE for energy performance, taking the minimum energy performance from 10% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2007 to:

  • LEED-New Construction = 18% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2007 (currently 4 points)
  • LEED for Healthcare = 16% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2007  (currently 3 points)

This step is being taken because LEED v4 has been delayed for so long that LEED 2009 is in danger of falling behind current energy codes.

This change does not affect projects already registered under LEEDv2009! This will only be applicable to those projects registered 30 days after the ballot period ends, if approved. The ballot will be held in Winter 2015, so this change will likely go into effect at the first of 2016. Projects can register now to lock in the lower minimum energy thresholds.

A reminder that LEEDv4 becomes mandatory on October 30, 2016 for all projects.
