City Of Houston Building Receives Special Designation For ‘Going Green'

Houston’s Traffic Operations Center near Shepherd and Interstate-10 is where the city monitors problems on the streets, things like broken traffic lights.

It opened a little over a year ago, and it now has a major designation. It’s the latest Houston building to be awarded gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

City of Houston Unveils A New Environmentally-Friendly Building

The City of Houston is celebrating the LEED Gold certification for its new Traffic Operations building. According to figures released by the city, the facility is 23% more energy-efficient than the usual code-compliant building.

The building features all-LED lighting and about 20% of the building materials were locally-sourced. Environmentally-friendly paints and flooring were used in the building’s construction. There’s also a stormwater treatment system. Continue Reading...

Mayor Turner and Kirksey Showcase New LEED Gold City Building

On Monday, Mayor Turner and city officials joined Kirksey Architecture for the unveiling of the new City of Houston Traffic Operations LEED Gold building. The facility, designed by Kirksey, is 23% more efficient than a typical code-compliant building. The goal of the new operations facility was to reflect the energy and movement of the traffic it orchestrates, while staying true to the city’s mission of energy-efficient green building. More than 88% of construction waste was diverted from landfills due to smart reuse and recycling of materials by the contractor, Pepper-Lawson Construction. Continue Reading...
